DESERT ISLAND CASTAWAYS: S. Rodman

Our favorite  MM authors a.k.a. castaways are asked, what books, songs and luxury item would they take to a desert island?

This is a monthly series inspired by LezReviewBooks.com’s ‘Desert Island Books’, which in turn is based on BBC’s ‘Desert Island Discs’.

The rules are fairly simple:

List up to ten books, a playlist and one luxury item that you couldn’t do without on a desert island.

Any type of book can be selected, but I ask that at least half are LGBT+ books. Choices should be justified in a paragraph or two. Any number of songs and any type of music is allowed. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Let’s welcome our April castaway, S. Rodman!

DESERT ISLAND BOOKS:

  1. Captive Prince by C. S Pacat

A classic book! I love the whole trilogy but being cheeky and just choosing the first one so I can fit more books onto my list. I adore Laurent. Strong yet vulnerable characters with dark pasts are my jam!

  1. Captive Mate by Eliot Grayson

I adore this. Arik is brilliant. He fits my strong yet vulnerable jam perfectly and he is a necromancer as well! Necromancers are my second weakness.

  1. Darkspell by Katherine Kerr

A very old book and definitely not a romance. It’s a fantasy and it was my introduction to MM. I was an avid fantasy reader in my teens and picked up this fantasy book. It has a very dark and twisted non-con MM subplot and it had me completely hooked. It was the first LGBTQIA representation I had ever seen.

  1. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation

A necromancer who everyone is terrified of, what can I say! I love the flip on this. The ‘dark’ character is the sunshine and the ‘light’ character the grump. Genius. I love everything about this book and I’m in awe that the author was so young when she wrote it.

  1. Moth by Lily Mayne

Oh sweet, sweet Moth! Strong, spiky, stabby but so very very vulnerable under all of that. Sigh. Just perfection. This book made my heart actually flutter and gave me shivers. Absolutely fantastic.

  1. Winter’s orbit by Everina Maxwell.

I love the slow burn of this. Another strong yet vulnerable character. I loved how his strength was calm, collected and acting very proper at all times despite everything he had been through. Deliciously delightful book.

  1. Irresistible poison by Alessandra Hazard.

Proper enemies-to-lovers! I get so disappointed when a book is billed as an enemies-to-lovers but it’s more a dislike-each-other-to-lovers. In this book, the hate burns! It’s great. Again a feisty, mouthy character who is secretly hurt by the rejection. Beautiful.

  1. Dearly despised by Alessandra Hazard

A recent book that I really enjoyed. More brilliant enemies-to-lovers. Steamy. Fun plot and I thought Samir was such a sweetie.

  1. A Very Armitage Christmas by Eliot Grayson

More fun with Arik and other characters that I enjoy from this series. It is a fun book but there is a scene where Arik is upset and hides in a bathtub and, oh my the angst and the feels, gets me every time!

  1. Lost star by Morgan Hawke

One of the first MM books I ever read, many years ago. Seht is hot! I love him. I love how this series evolves. Seht is the scary alien prince is the dominant one in the relationship but then the tables are turned and he accepts a submissive role in order to stay with Ravnos. Brilliant.

DESERT ISLAND PLAYLIST:

I listen to the ‘Sexy Pop’ playlist on Amazon Music when I am writing steamy scenes and the ‘Love Songs’ or ‘Instrumental Jazz’ stations for other scenes.

I’m going to make a public Spotify Playlist for each of my books soon and publish the links on my website and in the back of my books. I have no idea if anyone will be interested, but it will be fun to do!

I have my own playlist, which over the years has ended up on YouTube, Spotify and Amazon Music. It’s hundreds of songs long and contains things from Dubstep to Irish Folk. I named it ‘Awesome’ years ago, way before Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy and his infamous mixtape! (Well the movie anyway, I accept the comics may pre-date me!) This is the playlist I’d like to take with me to my desert island.

LUXURY ITEM

If it’s not cheating because I have already chosen my ten books, my Kindle. Fully downloaded with thousands of books. Fully charged and with a solar charger.

If that’s not allowed, something to write on! I’ll be thinking up stories and characters all the time on my desert island so it would be lovely to have a means of capturing it.

If there was food, water, shade, a comfy bed and no mosquitoes, being alone on a desert island with a ton of books for the rest of my days sounds like utter bliss.

Thank you so much for inviting me to take part! It’s been fun.

ABOUT S. RODMAN

I love characters that are battered and broken by life, who through the course of finding love, discover they are strong.
I like to pour my dark past into my characters and hope I will be forgiven.
Despite everything, because of everything, I will always believe that love conquers all.

The S in S. Rodman stands for Sez.

I’m outrageously queer and proud of it.

I live in Wales in a dilapidated Victorian villa with marble fireplaces and stained glass windows. In which I take great delight in swanning around in whilst wearing various silky robes, pretending that I’m some sort of character from a gothic novel.

Unlike most authors I don’t have any cats. I have the world’s daftest labrador as a companion instead. He is very good at listening patiently to all my story ideas.

I’m chronically single, a state I vehemently insist that I adore. But the fact that I spend all my time writing or reading romance books may indicate that I wouldn’t entirely object to a hot alpha coming along and sweeping me off my feet.

If that does ever happen, I’d definitely write a book about it.
