DESERT ISLAND CASTAWAYS: A.M. Johnson

Our favorite MM authors a.k.a. castaways are asked, what books, songs and luxury item would they take to a desert island?

This is a monthly series inspired by LezReviewBooks.com’s ‘Desert Island Books’, which in turn is based on BBC’s ‘Desert Island Discs’.

The rules are fairly simple:

List up to ten books, a playlist and one luxury item that you couldn’t do without on a desert island.

Any type of book can be selected, but I ask that at least half are LGBT+ books. Choices should be justified in a paragraph or two. Any number of songs and any type of music is allowed. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Let’s welcome our September castaway, A.M. Johnson

DESERT ISLAND BOOKS

Books I would take

Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman

This book is poetry and so emotionally driven. I think it’s impossible to relate to Elio’s character as a queer person. I can reread this book 10000 times and still find new things to love about it. It’s raw and candid in a way that I love.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

This is hands down one of my favorite books. This was the book I read in my freshmen year in high school that made me want to pursue writing. I loved writing from when I was a little girl, but this book sort of solidified my feelings about words and my own battle with depression and it is such a part of me I would have to have it with me on the island.

Heart Song by TJ Klune

This book is everything. I can reread it and laugh and cry and just swoon. Actually, i would want to bring the entire Green Creek series with me. Shifters and so much diversity and poetic prose with a touch of heat. Perfection.

DESERT ISLAND PLAYLIST:

I would have to have a playlist loaded with every Troye Sivan and Taylor Swift, plus some of my old favorites Jets to Brazil and Jawbreaker. Also anything by Bon Iver and Novo Amor or The Lumineers. A lot of good folk and some indie’s from my punk past. I love way too many types of music to narrow it all down!

LUXURY ITEM

Assuming I have an mp3 player that will never lose charge because of the playlist, the one luxury item would be sun screen.
