DESERT ISLAND CASTAWAYS: Alexa Piper

Our favorite MM authors a.k.a. castaways are asked, what books, songs and luxury item would they take to a desert island?

This is a monthly series inspired by LezReviewBooks.com’s ‘Desert Island Books’, which in turn is based on BBC’s ‘Desert Island Discs’.

The rules are fairly simple:

List up to ten books, a playlist and one luxury item that you couldn’t do without on a desert island.

Any type of book can be selected, but I ask that at least half are LGBT+ books. Choices should be justified in a paragraph or two. Any number of songs and any type of music is allowed. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Let’s welcome our November castaway, Alexa Piper

DESERT ISLAND BOOKS

Ten books I’d like to find washed ashore with me, in no particular order:

  1. Soul Eater, Lily Mayne. It’s very immersive, and I like a love interest who is just a little bit homicidal, in a good way.
  2. The Wolf at the Door, Charlie Adhara. Different take on werewolves living among us. Less homicidal characters, but that’s okay.
  3. Catch and Release, Isabel Murray. Well, one of the characters is pretty good at murdering fish… I love that the two main characters are so clearly from different worlds and still somehow manage to bridge that gap. And reading a merman romance on a desert island is just the kind of thing that would make me laugh.
  4. Forsaken Fae, R. A. Steffan. Acerbic and abrasive, but really sweet deep down. That’s how I like my Fae.
  5. A Ferry of Bones & Gold, Hailey Turner. Immersive and so much action. Fun!

6. The Alpha’s Warlock, Eliot Grayson. Two reasons: socks and coffee.
7. Matchstick Men, Adira August. This book shouldn’t appeal to me, but it does. It shifts tenses and viewpoints. It’s contemporary. I love it.
8. The 5th Gender, G. L. Carriger. Love how this treats language. No homicidal tendencies. The sun on this island is softening me up.
9. The Trouble with Trying to Date a Murderer, Jennifer Cody. I’m well again! Homicide! (Every meme you’ve seen about an author’s search history is accurate.)
10. Bloodline, Joel Abernathy. It’s bringing back fond childhood memories of reading about gay vampires, but this book goes from the past into the future, and I love it so much. Immersive. Murder. All my favorite things.

DESERT ISLAND PLAYLIST:

Playlist… well, I’m not much into music. I think I could do without it to be honest, and I know that will sound odd to some people. If I could get just one thing for the rest of all time, maybe Beethoven’s 7th. I like the second movement.

LUXURY ITEM

Laptop with solar charger. I’d want to write.
