DESERT ISLAND CASTAWAYS: Marshall Thornton
Our favorite MM authors a.k.a. castaways are asked, what books, songs and luxury item would they take to a desert island?
This is a monthly series inspired by LezReviewBooks.com’s ‘Desert Island Books’, which in turn is based on BBC’s ‘Desert Island Discs’.
The rules are fairly simple:
List up to ten books, a playlist and one luxury item that you couldn’t do without on a desert island.
Any type of book can be selected, but I ask that at least half are LGBT+ books. Choices should be justified in a paragraph or two. Any number of songs and any type of music is allowed. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.
Let’s welcome our September castaway, Marshall Thornton!
DESERT ISLAND BOOKS:
The Swimming Pool Library – Alan Hollinghurst – I’ve read it twice, absolutely amazingly queer.
The Line of Beauty – Alan Hollinghurst – an eighties twist on Brideshead Revisited. Everything Saltburn should have been but wasn’t. All of his books are worth it.
Fadeout – Joseph Hansen – Absolute classic, foundational for the gay mystery genre.
Blue Heaven – Joe Keenan – Hysterically funny. He went on to writer Frasier.
Slow Horses – Mick Herron – I just read the entire series, totally addictive. Also, the TV show. Amazing.
Hold Tight – Christopher Bram – Set in World War 2. Sexy and fun.
P.S. Your Cat Is Dead – James Kirkwood – I’ve read this at least three times. And seen the play half a dozen. Always worth the trip.
A is for Alibi – Sue Grafton – Brilliant series. She taught me to love the minutia of a character’s life.
Borrowed Time – Paul Monette – Heart-wrenching memoir. And yet I can still be nostalgic for that time.
Howards End – E.M. Forster – His insight into others is amazing. Particularly when you find out he didn’t have sex until after he finished writing books!
DESERT ISLAND PLAYLIST:
Playlist? I listen to covers by strange people. A favorite album is Stardust – Willie Nelson. I also like cover albums by Cyndi Lauper and Joni Mitchell.
LUXURY ITEM
Luxury island on a desert island – soap
