The book is written entirely in Ben’s POV so I loved how this song seems to speak from Nikolas’s perspective.
The lines “Oh Iโve been a stranger / Sleeping with you in my bed / I wish I could save you / From the thoughts up in my head” is basically what the book is all about.
“We all come from broken arms / But still I keep you close / Iโm an empty hollow shell / On a one way trip to hell / And all these thoughts inside my head / Are fears of loneliness from years I canโt relive” sum up his history and his state of mind. Also, he way he kept Ben in his life through the years.

The entire song resonates strongly with book. The lines “You felt the pain of a bitter defeat / Where the weight of the grief is more bitter than sweet / It matters, Iโm telling you it matters” reminds me of the scene where Mark visited the grieving family, looked the mother in the eye and promised to give her murdered son justice.

The lyrics “Talking / Why’s everyone always talking? / Noise in my head / But it’s nonsense / I can’t feel love” is the dark secret Winter carried most his life. “But every time I look in your eyes /The world gets quiet” is Fox and his gift of Silence.

According to songmeaningsandfacts.com, this Dave Matthews Band classic is a song about “a complex relationship between two people who are most likely incompatible yet long to be with each other“. After reading The Murder Between Us, I couldn’t help but relate this to Noah and Cole.
“You cannot quit me so quickly / There’s no hope in you for me / No corner you could squeeze me / But I got all the time for you, love” is Cole patiently waiting for Noah to come to terms with himself.
“The Space Between/The wicked lies we tell/And hope to keep safe from the pain” is Noah hiding a part of himself because of his many fears.

With lyrics that go “Now, letโs stop running from love/ Running from love… Letโs stop running from us”, My My My! is a song about liberation and sexuality. It’s talks of two people who were in initially in denial about their feelings but eventually stopped running away and came together. I relate this to how Trent, who liked to think he was straight, came to terms with his attraction to Wood.

I hope I got the lyrics right for this song. I had to transcribe it myself because I can’t find them anywhere. I loved how the guitar-heavy sound, languid vocals and minimalist words fit the vibe the of the book.
The verses “Strange moon on the horizon / then weโre crawling in its wake / looking over our shoulders / counting up our past mistakes” remind me of the part where Niall always think himself a bad person because of his past and therefore undeserving of good things. Also how the case connects to the death of Matt’s father a decade ago.
The last verse describes the happy ending at the end of the book: “glorious we are together / we could leave the rest alone / we could hear the call of every new morning / we wake up where we belong“
