Possible Queer Story Prompts Inspired by Songs
Many times I hear a song and think, hmm that would make a good soundtrack for this or that novel. But once in a while, I hear a song and think, hey this would make a good book. Songs are basically stories with music anyway.
This post is about songs that I think would make a good basis for a story. I have no storytelling skills whatsoever so I hope some creative mind somewhere would make these happened.
NYC – Interpol
“I had seven faces
Thought I knew which one to wear
But I’m sick of spending these lonely nights
Training myself not to care
The subway is a porno
Pavements, they are a mess
I know you’ve supported me for a long time
Somehow, I’m not impressed“Prompt: A young immigrant cab driver, a mysterious non-binary individual takes a ride to nowhere, a city on the brink. Gritty, urban fantasy with something like what Tara Sim did with her clock spirits in Timekeeper trilogy but with cities.
Knee Socks – Arctic Monkeys
“When the zeros line up on the 24 hour clock
When you know who’s calling even though the number is blocked
When you walked around your house wearing my sky blue Lacoste
And your knee socks“Prompt: A sapphic coming of age, new adult story involving midnight phone calls, stolen kisses in coat closets and the tantalizing zettai ryouiki
CVS – Winnetka Bowling League‘
“And I wanna buy you
Chocolate hearts from CVS
Kiss you too hard and follow you west
Sing you sad songs on a Sunday afternoon
Yeah I think I’d like to
Tie you in ways that you can’t undo
Dinner in bed and Korean food
Say I love you just a little bit too soon”Prompt: Ok so taking it literally the entire chorus of this song had the makings of a fluffy rom com with a dash of kink.
Something Good – Alt J
“Something good, oh something good tonight will make me forget about you for now.
Get high, hit the floor before you go.
Matador, estocada, you’re my blood sport.
But something good tonight will make me forget about you for now
Forty-eight thousand seats bleats and roars for my memories of you,Now that I’m fully clean the matador is no more and is dragged from view.
Get high, hit the floor before you go.
Matador, estocada, you’re my blood sport.
Forty-eight thousand seats bleats and roars for my memories of you,
Now that I am clean the matador is no more and is dragged from view.
But something good tonight will make me forget about you for now.”Prompt: A dark, angsty shifter story about a were-bull and a matador complete with enemies to lovers, forbidden love romance with lots of horns, blood, and roses. But make it a happy ending.
This is the video that inspired this post. When I first saw it, I was in a shifter mood and thought there was SOMETHING between the bull and the matador, especially at the end of the song. Like they were sorry they had to do it to each other.
Anyway, that’s me and my brain on gay. Hope you enjoyed this post. What songs do you think would make a good book? Where do you usually get your story ideas?
