SOUNDTRACK: My My My! by Troye Sivan
Soundtrack to A True Lover’s Story: Wood by A.E. Via
With lyrics that go “Now, let’s stop running from love/ Running from love… Let’s stop running from us”, My My My! is a song about liberation and sexuality. It’s talks of two people who were in initially in denial about their feelings but eventually stopped running away and came together. I relate this to how Trent, who liked to think he was straight, came to terms with his attraction to Wood.

SOUNDTRACK: Black Moon by Heathers
Soundtrack to Veiled Intentions: Black Moon by Elle Keaton
I hope I got the lyrics right for this song. I had to transcribe it myself because I can’t find them anywhere. I loved how the guitar-heavy sound, languid vocals and minimalist words fit the vibe the of the book.
The verses “Strange moon on the horizon / then we’re crawling in its wake / looking over our shoulders / counting up our past mistakes” remind me of the part where Niall always think himself a bad person because of his past and therefore undeserving of good things. Also how the case connects to the death of Matt’s father a decade ago.
The last verse describes the happy ending at the end of the book: “glorious we are together / we could leave the rest alone / we could hear the call of every new morning / we wake up where we belong“

SOUNDTRACK: Burn It Down by AWOLNATION
Soundtrack to Magic & Steam: The Gangster by C.S. Poe
I think of the Magic & Steam songs as Gillian’s boss fight soundtrack. Throughout his most of his life, Gillian survived by lying and holding back his magic just so he could escape the notice of the powers that be. I imagine this song playing at that critical moment where he thought “fuck it!” and unleashed everything.

SOUNDTRACK: Run by Hozier
Soundtrack to The Venetian and The Rum Runner by L.A. Witt
I chose this Hozier ballad for a book about an Irish gang working for an Italian mobster because the singer explained that this is a song based on a James Joyce quote about Ireland. I also relate the lines “Rare is this love, keep it covered / I need you to run to me, run to me, lover / Run until you feel your lungs bleeding” to Danny being magnetically drawn to the Italian mobster despite all that he stood for and Carmine offering protection to the hostile Irishman who made his heart beat faster.

SOUNDTRACK: Honey by Boy Pablo
Soundtrack to Aster Valley: Sweet as Honey by Lucy Lennox
There are several songs entitled Honey but what made me pick this song by Boy Pablo were the plant-themed lines “The flowers wither / And the clouds grow bigger / Up in the garden alone, I’m freezing but it’s fine/ ‘Cause I’m thinking of you / And all the things we could do / Running as fast as I can, glad I forgot to tie my shoes” . It reminds me so much of Truman. Tying his shoelaces is something he would definitely forget to do if his head is in the clouds a.k.a. thinking of Sam. Come to think of it, there WAS a scene where his shoes was untied.

SOUNDTRACK: Safety by Yoke Lore
Soundtrack to This Is Not Revenge by Romilly King
It was hard to find a song for this book. The songs about Stockholm Syndrome I found didn’t feel right. They were too negative, mostly about feeling used and abused in a relationship. I wanted a song that felt more positive because for all the wrongness of his methods, Gil had good intentions. He really wanted to protect Leo.
I finally picked Safety by Yoke Lore because it’s a song about protection. There’s a spiritual aspect to it that I relate to how Gil sees the world as well as a part that talks about not wanting to be let go which I relate to Leo.
“You are as perfect as all the seven days of creation, god must have loved it / Salt leaves and door screens, blood bed and night screams / I’ll be your safety, if you’ll be my safety / But soon I will try to fly out and leave you / But please don’t believe me, tie weights to my feet”
