Excerpt:

The music reverberated throughout the cavernous room, sending goosebumps over his skin. He knew the honour of even being there. As the second son of an earl, he hadn’t technically qualified, yet, much to his older brother’s annoyance, had secured his place in the congregation through his own connections.

Prince Arthur, now officially the first-in-line to the throne, walked past. He caught Alexander’s eye and winked. Alexander gave him a slight grin and a nod. Then the prince was gone, following his mother to face her new subjects for the first time as crowned sovereign.

Alexander knew a lot of the faces in the congregation. His blond hair and dazzling blue eyes had given him an entrée into London society. Unfortunately, his attempts at trying to use it to his advantage had stretched that goodwill a little thin.

The heralds opened the doors, and the United Kingdom greeted its new Queen. The noise from the crowd lining the streets roared into the Abbey, drowning the music. She had always been popular for her down-to-earth approach.

Alexander turned to his father, Earl Fitzwilliam, who wiped a tear from his eye. “We’re so lucky to have witnessed that,” he murmured.

“Yes,” the earl replied. “History in the making.”

“Such a shame your brother wasn’t allowed to be here,” Alexander’s stepmother, Cynthia Fitzwilliam, cut in.

“Cynthia,” the earl said, “I think we’ve said as much on that subject as we need to.”

After all these years, her relentless barbs could still hit home. Alexander swallowed down his response, stared straight ahead, and counted to ten.

Alexander glanced to his right. His friend, Finton, appeared to be just waking up.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Alexander whispered.

“Don’t swear in the Abbey,” Finton replied. “I’ve got a shocking hangover.”
“Arthur scrubbed up well though,” Alexander replied.

A blush spread across Finton’s face. He and Arthur had had a fling not long after they’d left school. It had only lasted a matter of months. Even so, Finton had fallen hard. However, duty called, and the prince had ended things.

Finton had started a relationship with a film director to ease his broken heart.

“How’s Benjamin?”

“I’ll be glad when all this is over,” Finton grumbled. “I haven’t seen him for weeks. Not properly.”

What would it be like to miss someone like that? Alexander had had flings in his time, yet he’d never felt that yearning. “You’re not happy if you’re not lovesick,” he whispered.

“What happened with old Hopkins?”

Alexander shivered. Jasper Hopkins had been a disaster. He’d insisted on wandering around nude. Alexander had intercepted him answering the door to his elderly neighbour, the Professor.

“I was vulnerable. I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Get back in the game, old man,” Finton said, clapping him on the shoulder.

The game I’m losing spectacularly. I don’t even know the bloody rules.

People were filing out of the Abbey. The Royal party would be whisked to Buckingham Palace to continue the weekend of carefully scheduled celebrations.

Alexander followed Finton and his parents into the spring sunshine. Finton’s mother appeared out of nowhere.

“I want to introduce you to someone, Finny.”

“Give me a second, Ma,” his friend replied, making a face at Alexander.

“What’s this?” Alexander said to Finton.

“Don’t even ask,” he replied. “Father has a mission to marry me off. It’s time to provide an heir.”

Alexander frowned. “I hope he doesn’t give mine any ideas.”

Finton guffawed, making a few people turn their heads. “I shouldn’t think so, Fitzwilliam. I think your cat is out of the bag. Or should I say dog ?”

Alexander shuddered. “Don’t even mention it. I’m still persona non grata. I played right into Cynthia’s hands with that one.”

Finton chuckled. “It’s early days yet, mate. I’m sure you’ll live it down, eventually. This is just your fifteen minutes of fame.”

“It’s going to be a bit longer than fifteen minutes,” Alexander replied. “I have news.”
