LAST YEAR I WAS READING…(June 30, 2021)

This meme was created by Reading Marie. It’s a great meme because it’s nice and easy to do.

Here are the rules:

Take your current read and compare it to what you reading this exact time last year. Which one do you like better? What is different about the books? Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to

This Year I Am Reading…

Winter Varik believes in only one thing—protecting his family.

Even from himself.

For nearly 200 years, he’s kept a dangerous secret from his brothers.

But Winter might have found his salvation in the form of a sexy witch named Fox.

Too bad this same witch was named in a prophecy foretelling the destruction of the Variks.

The most mysterious Varik brother finally tells his story!

The 3rd book, Waking Bel, is my favorite so far but Winter’s tale of secrets and death put a lot of painful memories to rest. About time these boys get closure.

Series review soon.

Last Year I Was Reading…

Noah Sinclair is best described as an egotistical, pompous, anal retentive, asshat. And those are his better qualities. Lately, Noah has lost touch with his playboy character “Jace” on the show Americana and can’t quite put his finger on why. The studio decides it is time to shake up his character by making him an offer he can’t refuse, literally. They will introduce a new love interest for his character “Jace.” Only this time, there’s a twist.

A case of life imitating soap.

This had an interesting premise but suffered from a lot of telling rather than showing. The writing was also repetitive. The relationship between Noah and Josh was a mess.

My 2.5-star review here.

Today we have a vampire paranormal and a contemporary romance. The books are very different from each other. Maybe a bit of a stretch here, but two similarities are the enemies to friends to lovers aspect and coming out issues.

Embracing Winter follows Winter Varik, family spy, enforcer and assassin, as he infiltrates an enemy mansion to kill the witch rumored to have prophesied his family’s destruction. The witch, Fox, turned out to be quite the surprise.

Winter and Fox started out as enemies but Fox is an unstoppable force who broke down the big bad vampire’s formidable walls to find a vulnerable, video-game loving man who just wants some peace and quiet. Wee Varik has been keeping a huge secret from his family. After 200 years, he finally found the courage to tell them the truth about his powers.

Just Like Heaven is about an actor, Noah, who found out his character in the new show is going to be gay. He was going to be paired with a first time actor. Josh. They suddenly found themselves attracted to one another but both are supposedly straight.

This book crammed all the popular tropes in one story. Noah and Josh started out as sorta enemies. They later became friends then lovers. There’s bisexual awakening thrown in with Josh admitting to having a crush on a footballer. It’s also a coming out story for Noah who was very closeted. There’s even a second chance romance with them breaking up and reuniting. It would have been epic had things been better executed. Theirs was an unhealthy relationship. They had better interactions with other people.

Noah and Josh still need lots of love to sort their shit out. So no contest really, Winter and Fox get all the hugs.

I’m ending the post with a book I’m looking forward to reading.

If these two don’t kill each other, they might fall in love.

Rand hates Jax because he’s the laid-back, vegan-eating, tree-hugging, total-Zen-until-I-get-a-chance-to-screw-you president of Sigma Mu Tau, the nerdy fraternity that’s the sworn enemy of Rand’s house, Alpha Lambda Alpha. What a phony!

Jax hates Rand for being the privileged, rich-heir-to-an-oil-empire, environment-destroying, soul-sucking president of the ALA jocks—but mostly because Rand hated him first. Rand has sent nothing but hateful vibes his way since the day they met. What a douche!

More enemies to lovers goodness with Head To Head.

This is the third book of Nerds Vs. Jocks series. I haven’t read the first two book yet but I’m planning to pick this one up first. I am DYING to know why Rand hates Jax!!!

What were you reading this time last year?

(I hope it’s as riveting as Morticia’s book)
