LAST YEAR I WAS READING…(March 31, 2021)

This meme was created by Reading Marie. It’s a great meme because it’s nice and easy to do.

Here are the rules:

Take your current read and compare it to what you reading this exact time last year. Which one do you like better? What is different about the books? Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to

This Year I Am Reading…

1881—Special Agent Gillian Hamilton, magic caster for the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam, has recovered from injuries obtained while in Shallow Grave, Arizona. Now back in New York City, Gillian makes an arrest on New Year’s Eve that leads to information on a gangster, known only as Tick Tock, who’s perfected utilizing elemental magic ammunition. This report complicates Gillian’s holiday plans, specifically those with infamous outlaw, Gunner the Deadly, who promised they’d ring in 1882 together.

Started slow then went full steam. I’m really loving this steampunk creation so far. Gillian is a sweetheart!

Last Year I Was Reading…

Vampires slaughtered my family.

No one believed me until I met some new friends, who promised to help me get justice.

But nothing prepared me for Marcus Varik.

A great series opener for the vampire-licious series Lords of Discord. These irresistible Variks are musically inclined vampires fighting hard to keep their family together with serious, strong-willed Marcus at the helm. And yes, they’re really brothers.

My 4-star review here.

We have a sci-fi and a paranormal today. Both are first books of the series.

The Gangster picks up after the events in the prequel, The Engineer. Gillian and Gunner make good on their promise to meet on New Year’s Eve 1881. This has all the magical, steampunk goodness you could ever ask for. High level magic is on display from the get go which I revel in. We have a virgin hero, a super perceptive outlaw, mechanical men, Victorian New York, underground clubs, even a love triangle. Gillian’s much awaited tryst with Gunner is not turning out to be what he expected. Will our poor federal agent ever catch a break?

Claiming Marcus also features a virgin hero, a serious, straight-laced one who found himself unable to resist the charms of a sunshiny human. Marcus had an adorable shy, awkward side as Ethan soon discovered. Each Varik brother specializes in a certain musical instrument and Marcus’s instrument of choice is the piano. Bless Ethan for introducing him to the joys of Tori Amos. This was initially an enemies to lovers story that wonderfully evolved into a friends to lover romance. The story also saw some action and suspense with vampire deaths throwing the brothers into bloody vampire politics. Sweet with just enough fangs keep you on your toes.

I badly want to be a Varik but I also want to be an agent for the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam just as much. Can I be both?

I’m ending the post with a book I’m looking forward to reading.

When I rode my bike into Aster Valley, it was supposed to be temporary. A quick, relaxing visit with friends. No entanglements. Zero drama.

But then I saw the bumblebee being harassed on the side of the highway.

This is going to be so adorbs! I just know it. I’m so here for that bumblebee.

This is the second book to Aster Valley, a highly enjoyable contemporary romance series by Lucy Lennox. It stars Mickey’s biker bestfriend, Sam, and Aster Valley resident, Truman Sweet.

What were you reading this time last year?

(I hope it’s as riveting as Morticia’s book)
