THE MUSIC TAG | Never Hollowed By The Stare

Apart from books, music is another obsession of mine. It started when I was 13 years old and saw the video of Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins. I was gobsmacked to hear something so radical and enchanting and so different from the usual 80s power ballads that are so prevalent in our local radio stations.

I waited for the radio stations to play that song but I got nothing. Until one day, I discovered the one and only alternative radio station located at far end frequency. The rest, as they say, is history…

1. Favourite band/musician of the moment?

I just recently discovered Glass Animals. I totally love their slightly RnB-ish, indie pop songs. Those soft vocals!

2. One band you’ve always come back to

Franz Ferdinand. I love post-punk in all its incarnations and they’re one of the standouts of the genre. Their uber-danceable tunes never fail to pick me up. I’ve always love the combination of their angsty lyrics and catchy guitar melodies.

3. Favourite movie soundtrack?

I love a couple of soundtrack from 90s movies. I never saw the movie but had the cassette tape of Angus OST from 1995. Sometimes OSTs only had one or two songs that stand out but all the songs here were really good. Also, I had a crush on Billie Joe Armstrong at that time.

The Crow soundtrack was also very memorable for me. It had one of the best line-up of musicians ever, from The Cure, to Nine Nails to Helmet and more.

The Spawn OST was also super cool. It went hand in hand with the movie’s sfx that were, at that time, cutting edge.

5. What’s your most embarrassing song on Spotify?

Lol I guiltily listen to the Manic Street Preachers cover of Umbrella. I also like David Cook’s version of Always Be My Baby. A secret I will take to my grave.

7. Favourite concert you’ve attended?

The first ever concert by a foreign artist I attended was by Nine Inch Nails in 2009. I came by myself because I couldn’t find anybody who liked the band as much as I do.

8. Most underrated musician in your opinion?

Wire. I know they have their own cult following but I think they rarely get any mention outside these circles.
