Whyborne & Griffin: Maelstrom – Jordan L. Hawk

Between his father’s sudden—and rather suspicious—generosity, and his own rash promise to help Christine plan her wedding, Percival Endicott Whyborne has quite enough to worry about. But when the donation of a mysterious codex to the Ladysmith Museum draws the attention of a murderous cult, Whyborne finds himself in a race against time to unlock its secrets first.

Griffin has a case of his own: the disappearance of an historic map, which quickly escalates to murder. Someone is sacrificing men in dark rituals—and all the clues lead back to the museum.

With their friends Christine and Iskander, Whyborne and Griffin must discover the cult’s true goal before it’s too late. For dark forces are afoot at the very heart of the museum, and they want more than Whyborne’s codex.

    They want his life.

Widdershins is what it’s all about this time. The gang is back in town to face another dark cult and more Lovecraftian abominations. Christine is getting cold feet about her upcoming wedding and drives Iskander crazy. The ladies, Miss Parkhurst and Persephone, help out with the wedding plans and Miss Parkhurst gets a new crush. Whyborne is suspicious about his father’s acts of generosity while Griffin gets an odd case and of course, involves his sorcerer husband in the investigation. Various threads from previous books were picked up and followed through. There were a lot of familiar and expected elements, given that this is book 7 already but the author was able to create fresh arcs, interesting twists and power ups that kept the whole thing from getting stale. The characters continue to develop, the librarians had exciting endeavors and at the end of it all, here I am thinking Durfee & Farr should get their own story.

    P.S.,
This is the last book with this kind of monotone cover. I’m going to miss this as the models really fit the W&G in my head.

Whyborne & Griffin: Hoarfrost – Jordan L. Hawk

Sorcerer Percival Endicott Whyborne and his husband Griffin Flaherty have enjoyed an unprecedented stretch of peace and quiet. Unfortunately, the calm is shattered by the arrival of a package from Griffin’s brother Jack, who has uncovered a strange artifact while digging for gold in Alaska. The discovery of a previously unknown civilization could revive the career of their friend Dr. Christine Putnam—or it might kill them all, if the hints of dark sorcery surrounding the find are true.

With Christine and her fiancé Iskander, Whyborne and Griffin must journey to the farthest reaches of the arctic to stop an ancient evil from claiming the life of Griffin’s brother. But in the rough mining camp of Hoarfrost, secrets fly as thickly as the snow, and Whyborne isn’t the only sorcerer drawn by the rumors of magic. Amidst a wilderness of ice and stone, Griffin must either face his greatest fear—or lose everyone he loves.

I really enjoyed this one, especially the latter parts. Whyborne and Griffin found old enemies and unlikely allies. We also get Griffin’s POV and Whyborne meets his brother-in-law!

I have listened to an H.P. Lovecraft audiobook,

At the Mountains of Madness ,that inspired this tale. And boy, was it a mind-numbing litany of architectural details. I like the mythos but the stories themselves (the few I have read) were not that entertaining. However, Jordan L. Hawk did a good job of remaking the original into something more suspenseful, action-packed and dare I say, more entertaining. This series just keeps getting better and better. Now, I wonder what’s up with the Ladysmith librarians…

Whyborne & Griffin: Eidolon – Jordan L. Hawk

Griffin Flaherty wants nothing more than to create a perfect Valentine’s Day for his lover, Dr. Percival Endicott Whyborne. Dinner at a fancy restaurant, an evening at the theater, and a romantic interlude at home should do the trick.

But a new client with an urgent case puts Griffin’s plans in jeopardy. A magic talisman has been stolen, and if it isn’t returned by sundown, it may unleash disaster not only on the thief but the innocents around him.

Can Whyborne and Griffin track down the thief and return the amulet by nightfall, or will dinner reservations become the least of their worries?

    I had to google the title. According to Wiki;

In ancient Greek literature, an eidolon (plural: eidola or eidolons) is a spirit-image of a living or dead person; a shade or phantom look-alike of the human form.

I love how Widdershins is full of creepy, old rich families. I love how this short story had all the usual W&G fare we love in condensed form. Most of all, I am ecstatic that this is from Griffin’s point of view and we can see how deeply he loves his Ival.

REVIEW: Threshold by Jordan L. Hawk

    18868181

Whyborne & Griffin: Threshold – Jordan L. Hawk

Introverted scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne wants nothing more than to live quietly with his lover, ex-Pinkerton detective Griffin Flaherty. Unfortunately, Whyborne’s railroad tycoon father has other ideas, namely hiring Griffin to investigate mysterious events at a coal mine.

Whyborne, Griffin, and their friend Christine travel to Threshold Mountain, a place of dark legend even before the mine burrowed into its heart. A contingent of Pinkertons-including Griffin’s ex-lover Elliot-already guard the mine. But Griffin knows better than anyone just how unprepared the detectives are to face the otherworldly forces threatening them.

Soon, Whyborne and Griffin are on the trail of mysterious disappearances, deadly accidents, and whispered secrets. Is Elliot an ally, or does he only want to rekindle his relationship with Griffin? And if so, how can Whyborne possibly hope to compete with the stunningly handsome Pinkerton-especially when Griffin is hiding secrets about his past?

For in a town where friends become enemies and horror lurks behind a human mask, Whyborne can’t afford to trust anything-including his own heart.

This one takes our beloved trio out of town. Expect complaints from Whyborne. Scary aliens from outer space or possibly other dimensions and ex-lovers make their presence known. Christine is Christine but to be honest I don’t particularly feel attached to Griffin here or even in the first book. He really does love Whyborne but I don’t really go squeeee over the two them. Could be that I have come across characters similar to Griffin in most books. But his loyalty to Whyborne counts in his favor so he’s fine and their chemistry as a trio adds color to the book.  Another minor complaint: I wish there was more magic but it’s understandable given that Whyborne still learning that we don’t see a lot of spells.

    REVIEW: Peacemaker by Morgan Brice

Sharps and Springfield: Peacemaker – Morgan Brice

Secret agents, forbidden love, danger, and magic!

Supernatural Secret Service agents Owen Sharps and Calvin Springfield meet on the train to their new assignment in St. Louis, and sparks fly between them. But it’s 1897, and they need to be very careful—falling in love can be dangerous for men like them.

It’s their first case together, investigating mysterious disappearances—including the two agents who preceded them. Grim evidence leads them to look for a darker purpose. Old ghosts haunt the railroad line, zombie rise, signs point to ritual sacrifice, and they suspect someone is trying to open the gates of hell.

Can Calvin and Owen stop the mayhem, thwart the vampires, and find true love, or will everything go up in smoke?

Peacemaker is a high-stakes steampunk MM romance thrill ride filled with found family, paranormal Pinkertons, intrepid reporters, mysterious disappearances, nefarious land brokers, hellhounds, zombies, vengeful spirits, dark spells, absinthe magic, a ruthless vampire railroad baron and a love that won’t be denied.

Before Colt and Winchester, there was Sharps & Springfield!

Peacemaker is the first book in the new Sharps & Springfield series

    Finally, gay Pinkertons!

I learned about Pinkertons from Whyborne & Griffin, the latter being a former Pinkerton detective. I haven’t encountered many MM stories about these detectives, so I was super excited for Morgan Brice‘s latest steampunk series, Sharps and Springfield.

Peacemaker is Book 1, and while there are no cosmic apocalyptic threats here, there are plenty of things that go bump in the night. The story opens with SSS Agent Owen Sharps’s anonymous meeting with his soon-to-be partner, Agent Calvin Springfield. The two somewhat hit it off, parted ways, met again, and were surprised to learn about each other’s identities.

The new partners were tasked to take over a case from two missing agents. It involved a massive railroad construction by sketchy billionaires headed by an even sketchier vampire. Later, there were encounters with hellhounds, zombies, witches and gates of hell.

As a means to lay the groundwork for future books, this opener built a fascinating world of magical secret agents, supernatural allies, badass non-magical humans, and enigmatic villains. As for the steampunk, it was sadly missing.

A highlight was the Pullman, a historical equivalent of the trailers rockstars use on tour. This one, though, was incredulous. The way it was described, it has three bedrooms with full-sized beds for people over six feet. There’s a kitchen, a shower, and an honest-to-goodness fully stocked library, armament room, AND research laboratory.

The exact size wasn’t mention, but the damned thing sounds like it’s bigger than my house. And it’s pulled by horses. HOW?!

I’m on the fence with the storytelling. On one hand, it was consistently engaging, and I had fun. On the other, the investigation involved many interviews with contacts and witnesses. This is realistic, but then most of the key events were told rather than shown.

Owen and Calvin danced around each other, trying to suss out each other’s gay vibes, but held back from openly pursuing their mutual interest. They practically just met, and with some homophobic folks publicly stirring trouble, they can never be too careful.

Majority of the time, they spent it apart, individually pursuing certain leads. So it was a stretch when the two suddenly declared they were in love. I would have preferred that they took at least the second book to actually get to know each other before throwing around ILYs.

Owen is a medium. It amuses me that he’s fan of Dracula the book. He has a Southern drawl and the charm, too. Calvin is a psychometric. He’s a bit more serious, but he loves comics. He used to run with a gang before being a Pinkerton.

I like Owen, Calvin, AND Winston, the witch butler and the most important character, because the boys are lost without him. I would also love more appearances by the rest of the cast. There’s a wonderful found family forming here, and I’m all for it.

Overall, Peacemaker has a great premise, the writing worked well for me, the characters are intriguing, and I loved this paranormal world the author created. I’m still wondering where this series fit in her multi-series universe.

It might be a mix bag, but if there’s one thing I love about Morgan Brice, it’s that her series gets better and better with each new installment. Witchbane is an excellent example. I can’t wait when Sharps and Springfield finally hit its stride.

SERIES REVIEW: Spellbound & Edge Lines by Ava Marie Salinger

The thing with most urban fantasy/paranormal series is that the premise pique my interest, but actually putting in the work to read them or finish them, well, most of the time, I never see the end. It happened with Whyborne & Griffin (the last book! gah!) and Soulbound. It gets to the point where so many things are happening for a prolonged period that it becomes a toss-up between laziness and boredom.

So far, Fallen Messengers is doing a great job of keeping me riveted. If this keeps up and hopefully wraps up soon, I can complete the series. I’m giving major props to narrator Alex Kydd. My first impression was he spoke too slowly. It turned out to be an advantage because his slow even delivery helps me through the info-dumps without brain overload. And he gave the million and one cast their distinct voices and personalities, which is impressive given that there are numerous female characters.

This is a review of Books 2 and 3.

Fallen Messengers: Spellbound by Ava Marie Salinger

Can Cassius and Morgan overcome an elusive enemy and save a young girl’s life?

Eden Monroe has spent her entire existence believing she has no magic. Shunned by her mother Brianna and the magical bureau Hexa, she runs away from home when she is forced to embrace a future she never chose, only to fall into the hands of ghastly monsters from the Nine Hells. After being rescued by a mysterious Dryad with secrets of his own, Eden realizes there is more to her past and future than she could ever have imagined.

When San Francisco PD asks Argonaut to assist them in solving a series of strange bank robberies, Cassius Black and Morgan King uncover a disturbing plot that points to an unknown artifact hidden somewhere in the city. Their investigation soon has them crossing paths with a desperate Brianna, who seeks their help in finding her missing daughter. When the witch reveals the shocking circumstances surrounding her daughter’s birth as well as the deadly magic sealed inside the young girl’s body, the Argonaut agents realize their case is linked to Eden and the weapon of devastating power the bank robbers are after.

Can Cassius and Morgan defeat the malevolent organization behind it all and save Eden from her cursed fate? Or will the young girl suffer a destiny worse than death itself?

Spellbound is the second novel in the gay urban fantasy romance series Fallen Messengers. This is an MM paranormal adventure full of action, magic, snark, and a host of steamy angels and demons.

Spellbound is the second book, introducing new characters and multiple POVs. I’m assuming each book will focus on one supernatural agency. Book 1, Fractured Souls, has the MC, Cassius the imperial, joining the Argonauts, the agency overseeing otherworldlies. This book features Brianna Monroe, head of Hexa, the organization of witches. She has a rather complicated relationship with her daughter Eden. The teen ran away after having had enough of her mother’s controlling ways.

What I love most about this series is that whenever people use magic, they go BIG! Even those who just discovered they have the ability don’t start small, which makes the fight scenes super mind-blowing. Although here, it’s a tad bit less intense than in Book 1, but still awesome. Possibly because a chunk of the plot is Eden struggling to survive the streets while being hunted by monsters. Reading about people on the run isn’t my favorite thing. Also, I had to wait for events to connect to Cassius, Morgan and their team. It’s a me problem because, objectively, this sequel rocks!

Fallen Messengers: Edge Lines – Ava Marie Salinger

The Gods have come to San Francisco…

Cassius Black and Morgan King’s trip to Ivory Peaks to uncover clues about their past takes an unexpected turn when a rift materializes and war demons attack the capital. Having saved one world by the skin of their teeth, they return to Earth, only to find it has been rocked by ominous quakes bearing a close resemblance to the phenomenon that nearly destroyed the Dryad kingdom.

After defeating demons that emerge from a crevasse in San Francisco, Cassius and Morgan rescue the Wild God Pan from the bottom of a rift with the help of Victor Sloan and the city’s otherwordly. But instead of thanking them, Pan makes a startling demand: rescue his lover and prevent the Spirit Realm from being destroyed, and he will reveal the truth about who Cassius and Morgan are.

Help comes from an unexpected source when a pair of Reapers visit the city and Cassius, Morgan, and Victor soon go hunting for a missing deity who may hold the key to saving all the realms. Can they free the immortals from their prisons and find the powerful artefact that can bend the mind and will of even a God? Or will the enemy who has long manipulated them from the shadows win this war and destroy everything they have come to care for?

Edge Lines is the third novel in the gay urban fantasy romance series Fallen Messengers. If you like your paranormal adventures full of action, magic, snark, and a host of steamy angels and demons, then you’re not going to want to miss this enthralling, fun-filled ride!

Edge Lines is the highly anticipated 3rd book because Victor Sloane!!!

The story also has multiple POVs but the majority is from Cass and his angel boyfriend, Morgan. This is where gods and demi-gods make themselves known. The team, along with Victor, has to deal with rifts and war demons appearing in various realms. It has something to do with the disappearance of the winter god and Pan’s lover, the winter god’s nephew.

As mentioned in my review of Fractured Souls, I’m not a fan of Morgan. His brand of assholery doesn’t appeal to me. Here, I go back and forth because, yeah, he’s super protective of Cass, but also an inconsiderate horndog who wouldn’t let his perpetually sleep-deprived boyfriend get proper sleep.

I am team Victor. Cass’ demon ex is a nicer guy than Morgan. That teeny tiny glimpse inside Victor’s thoughts revealed dark possessive desires of owning Cass, mind, body, heart, and soul. I suppose this was meant to show Morgan as the better man but Victor has the goodness in him to know doing so would kill the light in Cass that he loves. If Morgan has to stay go poly, please! Love triangles are never ever fun and tiresome as fuck! This could kill the series for me if it continues.

I’m wondering how much more epic the series could get because this one brought it up another notch! There are the crazy level-ups we love, long-awaited identity reveals that got me hyped for future events, and of course, the action scenes that always go nuclear. The writing strikes a great balance between info dumps, character progression, plot, imagery, and fight scene choreography. And with a talented narrator, this tale of the fallen and the otherworldly continues to be a spellbinding experience that kept me enthralled.

    P.S.

Fallen Messengers has a cute custom of giving many supporting characters their little happy endings. Cheesy but fun! So Victor might get one too, if he doesn’t end up throupling with Cass and Morgan. Can the angel and the demon share the imperial, please?

Fallen Messengers should be read in order. The adventure stars with Fractured Souls.

    SERIES STUFF: Ongoing Series

Series Stuff was inspired by this post by Paperback and Planners. It lists the series I’ve started, those I’ve finished, the ongoing ones and those I couldn’t be bothered with anymore.

I wanted to do everything all together then realized it was going to be one long ass post because I have too many series in my reading list. I decided to break it down into four separate posts.

There are a LOT of ongoing series in my TBR and more to come because let’s face it, I’m a serial series starter. Finishing a series? Not so much. Some of those in the list, I’m already down to the last book but just had to procrastinate as usual.

Click on the links for the reviews.

For series I’ve started, check out Begin the Begin.
For series I’ve finished, see The Finished Ones.
For series I’ve discontinued see Series I Dropped

The Vampire’s Club by X. Aratare – I’m currently in the middle of book 6. I’m disappointed they changed narrators but happily, Kieran Flitton is doing good job filling in Ethan Holtan’s shoes.

Psycop by Jordan Castillo Price – I LOVE Vic. He’s one of my favorite ‘voices’ when it comes to POVs. But for some reason, I still couldn’t find the mood to pick up book 7, Spook Squad. Not dropping this. No no no. I swear I’ll come back, Vic!

Holmes & Moriarity by Josh Lanyon – waiting, waiting, waiting to hear news of whatever new mess Kit gets himself into. Expected publication of book 5, The 12.2-Per-Cent Solution, is 2021.

Warriors of Rome by Various – I’ve read the first book, Left Hand of Calvus by L.A. Witt, which blew me away. I’m not sure if the other offerings would be as intense but I wouldn’t say no to reading the other books.

Whyborne & Griffin by Jordan L. Hawk – I’m on the very last book. I would like to say I’m not yet ready to say goodbye to the gang but truth is, yes, it’s the mood thing again.

SPECTR by Jordan L. Hawk – I love Caleb, John and especially Grey but somehow book 6, Summoner of Storms wasn’t holding my attention. It didn’t help that I also wasn’t feeling the narrator style. Still hoping to get back to this someday.

The Artifact by X. Aratare – The first book had a measly 2-rating but I’m a sucker for X. Aratare so I’m sticking around.

Tyack & Frayne by Harper Fox – This is one of those series I put on indefinite hold while waiting for that spark of interest to reignite.

Nothing Special by A.E. Via – Definitely sticking around for God and his boys. My grabby hands are out for that Ex Meridian audiobook because of narrator, Aidan Snow.

The Shamwell Tales by J.L. Merrow – A series of enjoyable stories with British humor which I really liked. I’ve finished Caught! and Played!. I’m hoping I could do a series review of this someday.

Think of England by K.J. Charles – This was originally planned as a series but somehow ended up in limbo. I’m not giving up yet on the next book yet.

Hexworld by Jordan L. Hawk – I’m heavily invested in the fate of these witches and familiars, I couldn’t walk away from this series even if I tried

The Bounty Hunters by A.E. Via – Even with a problematic 5th book, I don’t see myself walking away from Duke and his boys anytime soon.

Unbreakable Bonds by Jocelyn Drake & Rinda Elliott – I love the Unbreakable boys too much to even consider dropping this series. Even if sometimes things get a little to OTT. I’m currently on Blaze, Lucas and Andrei’s second book.

The Art of Murder by Josh Lanyon – One of Josh Lanyon’s most riveting series that I’m happily committed to. I’m currently on the fourth book, The Monument Men Murders.

Green Creek by T.J. Klune – I’m howling with the wolves from start to finish. I need to get my dirty claws on Brothersong soon or I’ll go feral.

Blake Harte Mysteries by Robert Innes – I really liked this little British whodunnit series with it’s locked room mysteries and charming characters. I’ve finished book 4, Reach. There are ten books out already but I’d happily read ten more.

Bad Behavior by L.A. Witt & Cari Z – I thought the series was over but happily the authors decided to write more books. YES!!! THANK YOU!!!

Bureau by Kim Fielding – A paranormal series about various supernatural creatures. I finished until book 3, Creature. This is one of the best Kim Fielding stories for me so I have high hopes for the rest of the series.

Montague Siblings by Mackenzi Lee – Monty’s book’s good if a little too meandering for my taste. I’m just don’t like reading about journeys. Monty and Percy? I live for these boys! I still need to get my hands on Felicity’s and Adrian’s books.

The King & Alpha by A.E. Via – Truth be told, the stories were kind of OTT but that’s Ms. V for you. They also satisfy my yen for vampire+shifter mergers. Basically, I’m reading this for the characters.

Seven of Spades by Cordelia Kingsbridge – This is a very well-written serial killer mystery. The only reason I’m stuck in the opening chapter of book 4, One-Eyed Royal, was because I was annoyed with everyone sticking their nose in Levi and Dom’s relationship woes.

Ward Security by Jocelynn Drake & Rinda Elliott – Waiting for the audiobook of book 5, Killer Bond, because I always enjoyed Kenneth Obi’s narrations.

Hazard & Somerset by Gregory Ashe – Putting book 6, Criminal Past, on hold because Hazard’s POV got a little too much for me. I love these two dorks so when I get past my petty issues, I’ll pick this up again.

The Rowan Harbor Cycle by Sam Burns – I got stuck in book 4, Devon’s book because I was bored. Thinking of just dropping it and moving on to Jesse’s book.

Cold Case Psychic by Pandora Pine – I was kind of meh with the first book, Dead Speak, but since the sequel, Dead Reckoning, showed improvements, I’m sticking with this for now.

Big Bad Wolf by Charlie Adhara – I was stuck in the middle of Thrown to the Wolves for the longest time. Until, I had a sudden yen for Park and Coop’s dysfunctional dynamics once again. The ending was so worth it. Now I’m excited for book 4.

Witchbane by Morgan Brice – This is another series with just ok stories that for some reason I’m stubbornly committing to. I think the overarching thread was good enough but not sure for how long I would stick around.

Death and the Devil by L.J. Hayward – I love Ethan Blade!!! So much that when you say assassin, he’s the guy that comes to mind. I’m willing to wait for the audiobooks just so I could hear his voice.

Flesh and Bone by Joel Abernathy – This is a super intense and quite dark shifter series. The second book, Bleed, even edged towards horror territory. It was my favorite. Can’t wait to read the third book.

Badlands by Morgan Brice – Wow, just how many psychic procedurals do I have?! Well, here’s another one.

The Ellwood Chronicles by Michele Notaro – You couldn’t help but love the Ellwoods. Currently on the final book, The Enchanter’s Heart.

Pro & Cons by A.E. Wasp – Charlie’s boys are all lovable but I’m really here for Carson.

Game Changers by Rachel Reid – I love Rachel Reid’s hockey boys. Sightings of Rozanov and Shane are always welcome. Still hoping to get my hands on book 3, Tough Guy.

New Milton by Sally Malcolm – I was completely charmed by this series. Sally Malcolm is one of the few authors who can make me read pure contemporary romance and make me love it.

Soulbound by Hailey Turner – The scope of the whole series is so damn epic that quite frankly, I’m overwhelmed. I need to get in the zone first before I tackle the third book.

The ABCs of Spellcraft by Jordan Castillo Price – Very much here for more of Dixon’s and Yuri’s misadventures

Fog City by Layla Reyne – Rooting very hard for the Madigan siblings. I’ve actually just finished the final book, A New Empire. Will be posting the review soon.

Paul Monroe Mystery by A.P. Eisen – This police procedural has it’s own understated charm that keeps me excited for the next book.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks by Josh Lanyon – I really like this witchy little cozy and I’m excited to see where the author takes this.

Hope you enjoy this ever-growing list of series. How many series do you have on your TBR? What’s your favorite ongoing series so far?
