MANGA: Maou to Yuusha no Kakeochi Bakansu

Maou to Yuusha no Kakeochi Bakansu – Baseu
For a hundred years, humans and demons have hated each other and fought without end. At last, the Demon King and the Hero come face to face, each intent on killing the other. But five years later the two are enjoying a romantic getaway on a tropical island!? What happened!? Where will their runaway romance lead?
The Demon King and the Hero’s Elopement Vacation is a rare established-couple romance featuring a Demon King and Hero who have already chosen love over duty.
Five years ago, humans and demons were locked in war when humanity’s savior, the Hero, ventured into the demon castle. The moment he met the Demon King, the two fell in love at first sight. Fast-forward to the present day, they now live lovey-dovey in a tropical island, having abandoned both their kingdoms and responsibilities.
They are found in such state by Basil, the Demon King’s assistant who has been searching for his lord. With the demon kingdom on the brink of civil war, Basil proceeds to pursuade the king to return. However, the Demon King and the Hero have plans of their own for the world and so refuse to be drawn back in. Unknown to the Demon King, tragedy might be closer than he realizes.
Despite talks of war, the story maintains a delightfully comedic tone. The Demon King and the Hero clearly adore each other even thuogh neither knows the other’s real name. Beloved by the island’s residents, they spend their days basking in the sun, growing vegetables, and enjoying domestic bliss.
Basil didn’t know what to make of everything, determined to hate humans, but is disarmed by Hero’s kindness. There is foreshadowing of darker things to come that creates a rift between the happy couple. Demon-human politics also come heavily into play pushing the Demon King and the Hero to confront the responsibilities they left behind.
The manga is an interesting take on the enemies to lovers trope with the world wanting our boys to be enemies when they desperately want peace. It deftly balances romance, duty, and politics without losing its light-hearted charm even when the couple is in crisis. Their love is so strong even with the huge divide, they remain close and find a way to bridge the emotional gaps. It brings a bit of drama and a sweet reconciliation.
While the story delivers a happy ending, it feels somewhat abrupt and revolves more around potatoes than the couple themselves. Still, seeing the Demon King and Hero return to their swoony lovey-dovey ways left me smiling.
Overall, the ultimate power couple.
