BOOK RECS BY TROPE: Roommates To Lovers
Book Recs By Tropes is a series where I recommend books according to tropes.
Today we have roommates to lovers. In my experience, this is not as common as enemies to lovers or friends to lovers but could be just as thrilling especially when you get two people throwing off crazy amounts of USTs while trying really hard (or not) to live together platonically.
Here are some of the most enjoyable roommates to lovers books I read. I hope you’ll enjoy them too.
Blame It on the Mistletoe – Eli Easton (4 stars)
(contemporary romance, holiday)
Are you curious about what happens when a socially clueless geek asks a straight jock to teach him how to kiss?
This little holiday treat answers that question in the most delicious way possible. Blame It on the Mistletoe is a jock + nerd, gay for you, roommates to lovers, bestfriends to lovers novella with snappy dialogue and dry humor. Lovable nerd Fielding is a ray of sunshine. He is a pure child-like soul that revels in everyday things with joy and exuberance. Our jock Mick endeared himself for being kind-hearted, loyal and caring. His internal “but I am straight?!” debates were super funny. And that kiss!!! Oh, that kiss…

Out On The Serve – Lane Hayes (4 stars)
(contemporary romance, sports)
If you are looking for a delightful story of sports, sand and summer romance, Out On The Serve delivers a fun and sweet story with two MCs that were opposites but synced so well with each other.
This is a roommates to lovers story of a pro volleyball player and a university student. Both are openly bisexual and insanely attracted to each other but had to fight the attraction for the sake of being friends and roommates. The evolution from roommates to friends to lovers was fantastic! The book also did a good job avoiding the usual pitfalls of romance. It might not have the grandest grand gesture moment but it definitely hits you right in the kokoro!

Falling for My Roommate – Garrett Leigh (4 stars)
(contemporary romance, angst)
If you interested in a roommates to lovers story that’s more than just romance, Falling for My Roommate is a raw emotionally gripping story that tackles mental illness, disability and the aftermath of a public outing.
It’s about two roommates and bestfriends who were mutually pining after each other. They play off each other so well and are like an old married couple. The characters are flawed but you will root hard for them. There’s a lot of angst and hurt/comfort, some humor, some sweeter moments. It’s a beautiful book that resonates strongly with many people. Living for those library trips and corner seat cuddles.
A Full Plate – Kim Fielding (4.5 stars)
(contemporary romance, fluffy)
Want a food-gasmic book where men moan in culinary ecstacy?
A Full Plate features a hotshot lawyer who was forced to house his friend’s cousin who turned out to be a kitchen genius. It’s a Cinderella tale in reverse where the prince found his love in the person of a pauper and left his castle in the big city to live happily ever after in a small house in a small town. The characters were so endearing. The lawyer was a sweetheart. I loved that when he said he will keep his hands off his roommate, he kept his hands off. The book is full of sweet, fluffy moments that trigger warm fuzzy feelings. And of course, all those mouth-watering food.
