“You sound strange. What’s up?”
They were twenty minutes into their Skype call, and Jack was curled up in bed in Jon’s spare room. He had the tablet propped on the pillow beside him and listened to Gareth breathing. Without the call, he’d be working through the night, but Gareth knew him too well. He’d insist on an answer, too.
“Nothing in particular. Just… being here when Jon isn’t. Wishing I knew what had happened.”
“Have you talked to the villagers?”
“Hm. They’re not saying much.”
“That’s villages for you, I suppose.”
Jack kept quiet, and Gareth didn’t make him wait.
“You think the villagers know who did it?”
“Not entirely.” Jack tried to explain the strange vibe he’d got every time Jon’s death had come up. “It’s like… they have an idea, but won’t say anything because… it would sound ludicrous?”
“Ludicrous.” Gareth tasted the word on his tongue and Jack pictured his eyes narrowing and his brows creasing. “Unbelievable, you mean?”
“I don’t know what I mean, Gareth. It’s a vibe. Unbelievable, implausible, impossible… I’ve no idea.”
“Have you talked to that detective fellow?”
“About a strange feeling I had in the pub? He’ll suggest I had a drink too many. Or he’ll tell me to stay away from the pickles.”
“Maybe your villagers feel the same way.”
“You’ve never lived in a village in your life. How do you know?”
“I know about people and people are predictable. If you’re after the intricacies of village life, talk to Conrad. He grew up in a place so tiny it isn’t even on the map. As he tells it, cows walked in the streets.”
“Yeah, right. When did he tell you that?”
“We may have gone out drinking one night.”
“That must have been a brief night. Man’s a lightweight. If you really want to go drinking, go with Lisa. Though, come to think of it, you probably have, haven’t you? Spill it, Flynn, who dragged whose arse home?”
“Jack. Look at me.”
That was an order. Jack realised he’d rolled onto his back and lay staring at the ceiling. Realised, too, that he’d been rambling. He turned his head towards the tablet and saw Gareth frown. “I’m okay. I promise.”
Gareth kept studying him. “No, you’re not. But you’ll do. For now.” Until I get you home went unspoken.
Jack heard it anyway.
