One Line Reviews Of Some Books I Read This Year (July – December 2024)

This is a round up of the books I read on the 2nd half of this year that I’m too lazy to do a full review.

The Last Picks: Mystery Magnet – Gregory Ashe

He was born to write mysteries. Now, he has to solve them.

When Dashiell Dawson Dane moves across the country to a small seaside town called Hastings Rock, he has one goal: get away from his ex. Okay, two goals – because he wouldn’t mind a little help from his new boss, celebrity mystery author Vivienne Carver. With Vivienne’s mentorship, Dash is sure he can get over this blasted case of writer’s block and start telling his own stories again.

The only problem? Vivienne is murdered on Dash’s first night at Hemlock House. And when police find a secret passage that connects Dash’s bedroom to Vivienne’s, they’re sure they know who did it. Now Dash has to prove his innocence – and the only way to do that is to figure out who really killed Vivienne Carver.

The signature misery-laced Gregory Ashe writing almost made me give up but something about this cozy mystery kept me hooked.
(3.5 stars)

The Last Picks: Dude Magnet – Gregory Ashe

You can’t hide from the truth. And apparently, you can’t hide from your ex either.

Dashiell Dawson Dane wants the simple things in to live in a (possibly) haunted mansion, to avoid socializing at all costs, and to write, and possibly finish, a book.

Unfortunately, the real world has a way of intruding. And since unfinished manuscripts don’t pay the bills, he finds himself persuaded—against his better judgment—to rent out Hemlock House for a wedding.

Having his ex-boyfriend, Hugo, arrive unexpectedly during the preparations is bad enough. But when Hugo is arrested for the murder of the groom-to-be, Dash seems to be the only one who believes he didn’t do it. And Dash’s efforts to uncover the truth will draw the attention of the real killer—who has a great deal to gain, and nothing to lose.

Almost too painful at times, but I’m rooting hard for Dash!
(3.5 stars)

The Last Picks: Doom Magnet – Gregory Ashe

They say bad things come in threes. Usually, they don’t mean murder.

After several months (and a few murders), Dash is finally starting to feel at home in Hastings Rock. He’s enjoying the quiet after the end of tourist season, he’s comfortable at Hemlock House (the jury is still out on whether it’s haunted), and most importantly, he has friends.

Friends, unfortunately, who have a tendency not to take no for an answer. Which is how Dash finds himself at a cold-water surfing competition only a few days before Halloween—and, even worse, attending a costume party at the surf camp later that evening.

When Dash stumbles across the body of a predatory local real estate developer, he’s the only one who believes it’s murder. Worse, Dash’s friend Deputy Bobby (they’re just friends, thank you very much) is on leave from the sheriff’s office while he and his fiancé prepare for their move to Portland. But Dash is determined not to let a murder go unsolved. And as Dash works to prove that the death was anything but accidental, the killer turns their attention to him.

With all these miserable Deputy Bobby business, I almost wished Dash was aro-ace but our boy is a trooper!
(3.5 stars)

The Last Picks: Broken Bird – Gregory Ashe

All’s fair in love and…publishing?

It’s nearly Christmas, and Dashiell Dawson Dane already has enough on his plate finding a present for his parents, coming up with excuses not to hang the Christmas lights, and finishing this stupid story he’s been writing (okay, maybe he needs to start writing it). On top of all that, Bobby has been acting…well, strange. The last thing Dash needs, in other words, is to play host when Marshall Crowe—celebrity author and, worse, a friend of Dash’s parents—comes to town.

When Marshall dies in the middle of a public reading of his latest novel, Dash can’t bring himself to believe it was an accident, but he’s determined to stay away from the investigation. Until, that is, the prime suspect shows up on his doorstep, begging for his help. The catch? It’s the same woman who accused Dash, not so long ago, of murdering Vivienne Carver—Hastings Rock’s resident cozy mystery author, Pippi Parker. And helping Pippi might just be the death of Dash.

Ooh, that ending had me squee-ing!

Shadowy Solutions: Skeletons in the Closet – Nicky James

The last thing Diem Krause wanted to do was ask for Tallus’s help.

The too-hot-for-his-own-good records clerk was so far outside Diem’s league that he became tongue-tied in his presence. Six months ago, after an embarrassingly unimpressive exchange in the bedroom that accentuated Diem’s flaws, he swore never to go near the sultry man again.

When a new case lands on Diem’s desk, one involving a dead, allegedly unfaithful husband, Diem exhausts every means of investigation until he has no choice but to seek out the man he swore never to see again.

Tallus has skills Diem doesn’t. In addition to being confident and sociable, Tallus can act and help him get answers.

But inviting Tallus into his case means relinquishing control, and Diem hates not being in control. Not only is the Toronto Police Department’s records clerk fanatical about investigative work, but he also has a thing for making Diem uncomfortable and pushing his boundaries.

When the case takes a dark and dangerous turn, the two spend far too many long nights trying to puzzle things out. Tallus’s flirty, suggestive behavior is going to get them in trouble, and the last thing Diem wants is to end up in bed with him again. It was a disaster the first time, and Diem doesn’t want to revisit the shame.

Will Diem be able to resist Tallus’s charm?

Can the two work together to solve the unusual case without crossing lines?

Diem isn’t so sure. He doesn’t want a partner. He doesn’t need a lover.

But with Tallus Domingo, he somehow ends up with both.

Diem, this big guy badly needed a friend in his corner so even if Tallus was borderline annoying and pushy, I’ll forgive.

Blood and Secrets – Beatrix Hollow

I’m a vampire hunter, a legacy meant only to care about killing monsters.
But all I’ve ever cared about is Sebastian.
I’m enamored… obsessed.
Stalking him and manipulating fate to keep us together.

We were assigned to Visamar Academy, where a group of powerful vampires gorge on the rich.
I failed him as a partner and he paid the ultimate price—the worst thing that can happen to a hunter.

My obsession wouldn’t let me end him.
I sullied our souls, damning us to Hell.
Crossed lines I never thought I would.

Now I’ll pay for those sins in blood.

The Brotherhood will kill me…
if Sebastian doesn’t first.

Author Note: This is first person, dual pov gothic mm romance.

Additional Content Information: There is blood play, biting (including genitals), muzzles, stalking/obsession, vague religious themes, chains/collars, violence/gore, death, guns, knives, fire, mention of parental death (previous to story), secret societies, anal, oral, and rimming.

While it needed more polishing and fleshing out, this had plenty of potential and a quite intense frenemies-to-lovers romance.

The Brotherhood: Just a Little Wickedness – Merry Farmer

Lord Alistair Bevan, Viscount Farnham, has the weight of the world on his shoulders. With his father’s health ailing, the time has come for him to find a wife, produce an heir, and do his duty. But Alistair knows a traditional life is not for him, especially when a chance meeting with valet Joseph Logan turns his world upside down.

Joe Logan came to London in search of his missing sister, Lily. But months have passed, and not only is Lily still lost, more children have disappeared as well. The trail of the missing children might be growing cold, but things are just starting to heat up between Joe and Alistair.

When both Alistair and Joe seek out the help of The Brotherhood—an underground organization dedicated to helping the gay community—they are drawn into a much deeper investigation of children who have gone missing all over London. When it begins to look like people very close to Alistair’s family are involved, Alistair finally has a chance to make his father proud. But will the wild and wicked love blossoming between Alistair and Joe help them find Lily, or will their affair be exposed and destroy both of them?

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Steam level – very spicy! And yes, this is an m/m romance, so if that’s not your thing, feel free to pass on this one.

The human trafficking ring they’re trying to stop might throw a shadow on the proceedings, the heartwarming romance, the engaging MCs, and their Brotherhood friends made this a hopeful, uplifting story.
(4 stars)

The Brotherhood: Just a Little Temptation – Merry Farmer

As the owner of an orphanage in a poor neighborhood of London, Stephen Siddel has the weight of the world, not to mention the care of tender souls, on his shoulders. He is a devoted father to dozens of children and an upstanding member of the community, in spite of his rivalry with the local nuns. But his heart and his reputation are overwhelmed by temptation the moment Max walks through the orphanage’s doors.

As a younger son from a grand family, no one expects much from Lord Maxwell Hillsboro, but he is determined to make a difference in the world, starting by patronizing a certain orphanage members of The Brotherhood have told him is in need of help. His heart is instantly engaged in the causes and concerns of the orphans, or rather it’s dashing and seductive owner, Stephen. Max feels he’s found his calling, even though his involvement could put both him and Stephen in danger.

But when some of the children from Stephen’s orphanage and the rival Catholic orphanage go missing, Stephen and Max must band together with the imperious Sister Constance to find them. What they discover is a much bigger kidnapping ring that requires them to join forces with David Wirth and Lionel Mercer of the law offices of Dandie & Worth. Can they rescue the children in time, or is something much more sinister going on? And will the passion growing between Stephen and Max ruin them all?

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Steam level – very spicy! And yes, this is an m/m romance (gay romance), so if that’s not your thing, feel free to pass on this one.

While the human trafficking ring is still an insidious presence, the love between Stephen and Max for each other and their children shone bright and true.

Mytho Investigations: Greed and Other Dangers – T.J. Nichols

Dragon shifter Edra has always lived to serve and protect—in ages past as a knight, and in the modern world as a mytho liaison to the San Francisco PD. Behind the scenes he safeguards the mythos community from scandal—and further human hatred. When the eggs of a rare greater dragon are stolen, Edra must find and return them before the mother razes the city.

Edra’s partner, Jordan, has just been promoted, and he’s on the trail of several stolen mythos artifacts. Together, they track the eggs to a colony of mermaids living in the bay near Alcatraz Island.

But trying to separate a mermaid from her treasure is asking for trouble.

As Edra and Jordan grow closer, they test the bounds of human-mythos relationships. But Jordan isn’t ready to mate for life, and Edra won’t pretend to be human for Jordan’s friends. With the hills on fire and a storm brewing in the bay—and in their bed—something’s got to give.

Book 2 in the gay urban fantasy series that follows Jordan and Edra as they solve crime and figure out how to improve Mytho and human relations. For readers who like dragon shifters and forbidden romance.

The first book was fascinating, if a bit preachy, yet at this point, I am ready to stand with Jordan and Edra in the fight for Mytho rights.
(4 stars)

Mytho Investigations: Envy and Other Cravings – T.J. Nichols

Having given into desire and cemented their mating bond, Jordan and Edra are under pressure to keep their relationship a secret. Jordan fears his career will be over if it is discovered the that he is sleeping with the Mytho Liaison Officer.

For Edra, there is no hiding his relationship as the werewolves can smell Jordan on his skin. He finds himself being shunned by some of the Mytho community because they view him as a traitor for bonding with a human.

When a grove of nymphs is attacked and one is brutally killed, Edra and Jordan will need to use every skill they have to prevent more bloodshed. To Edra, that means covering up evidence, and this time, Jordan agrees.

As secrets are exposed and old bribes surface, Edra and Jordan face the reality of what being mates means.

Book 3 in the gay urban fantasy series that follows Jordan and Edra as they solve crime and figure out how to improve Mytho and human relations. For readers who like dragon shifters and forbidden romance.

The wood nymphs made a huge (nightmarish) impression, even Edra, city knight and dragon shifter, treaded with care!
(4 stars)

Mytho Investigations: Envy and Other Cravings – T.J. Nichols

All the lines of fate have been pulling Edra Tendric to LA. It is the last place he wants to go, leaving his mate Inspector Jordan Kells in San Francisco to deal with a fractured mytho population and an increasingly tense political situation. Someone wanted Edra removed as Mytho Liaison, and they got their way.

With the exposure of their relationship, Jordan has to negotiate the fallout at work and among the people he called friends. As the elves arm themselves and favors are called in, Jordan will need to decide where he stands because doing the right thing doesn’t always mean following the law he swore to uphold.

Being a lesser dragon’s mate isn’t all mating flights and fun. Not when his mate is the Knight of a city on the brink of war.

Book 4 in the gay urban fantasy crime series that follows Jordan and Edra as they solve crime and figure out how to improve mytho and human relations. For readers who like dragon shifters and fated mates romance.

One of Edra’s most dangerous missions so our boy, Jordan, went above and beyond!
(4 stars)

Mytho Investigations: Sloth and Other Delights – T.J. Nichols

Negotiations with the LA vampires have failed.

Having survived the attempted razing of their enclave by the dragons, the vampires are now holding Jordan’s sister hostage and are demanding a unicorn for her safe return. There’s only one problem.

Unicorns aren’t animals. They are wild magic best left alone.

Jordan holds the media responsible for Katie’s capture. If they had stayed out of his private life, she would’ve been safe. With Edra banned from LA and Jordan unable to even look at the case, there is nothing they can do to facilitate her release unless they want to risk catching a unicorn.

The vote that will decide the status of mythological people draws near, protests are increasing, and wild magic is creating havoc in the city. Jordan and Edra are pushed to their breaking point. When Jordan encounters the unicorn, it gives him what he craves most: escape.

As tensions rise, lines are drawn. Edra is on his own to save Jordan and the city.

Book 5 in the gay romance urban fantasy series that follows Jordan and Edra as they solve crime and figure out how to improve mytho and human relations. For readers who like crime solving couples, dragon shifters and mythological creatures.

Epic dance-off to save the city, epic heartbreak in the vampire lord’s sacrifice.

Drake Security: Wild Fire – Mika Nix

He’s my nemesis, my rival, and the man I can’t get out of my head. We may be star-crossed but there’s enough heat between us to start a wildfire.

I’ve never been one to follow the rules, but sleeping with a wolf shifter might be over the line, even for me. So, why can’t I get him out of my head? Or his scent out of my nose. Even on the other side of the world, I swear I can still smell him.

Everyone has a hobby, mine just happens to be stealing from the rich and powerful to give back to the rightful owners. A native art exhibit in Sydney is the last place I expected to see Draydon again. I can’t shake the feeling that he’s here for the same reason I am… and here I thought larceny couldn’t get any more fun.

I’m a dragon without a proper hoard and he’s too jaded to even trust his own pack. But we’ve already lit a fire that’s getting out of hand.

Stealing Draydon’s heart might be my most impossible heist yet.

I loved how Arson and Dray matched each other’s wildness and lust for life!
(4 stars)

Drake Security: Inferno – Mika Nix

I know I should keep my hands off of Montrose. But the one thing dragons and demons have in common is how much we love to play with fire.

My youngest brother has always had a knack for getting himself into trouble, but this time he’s stolen from the wrong demon and it might just be the last mistake he ever makes.

I have no reason to trust Montrose, but my dragon does anyway. There’s something about the vibrant, sassy incubus that calls to me, no matter how hard I try to resist.

Saving my brother’s scales should be top priority, but this inferno between Montrose and I just keeps heating up.

If fate put him in my path, can I trust that we’ll make it to the other side of this disaster together? There’s only one way to find out…

A bit too sex-focused but apt for an incubus and his lusty dragon mate.

Torus Intercession: No Quick Fix – Mary Calmes

A retired SEAL is about to face his toughest assignment yet. As a nanny…

Fixer. Bodyguard. Advocate. Brann Calder is expected to play all these roles and more as a member of Torus Intercession, a security firm guaranteed to right what’s wrong. In the military, catastrophe was his specialty. Five months out of the service, Brann is still finding his way, so a new assignment might be just what he needs. Unless it includes two things sure to make a seasoned, battle-trained veteran nervous: life in a small town, and playing caretaker to two little girls.

Emery Dodd is drowning in the responsibility of single fatherhood. He’s picked up the pieces after losing his wife and is ready to move on now, hopeful that his engagement to a local patriarch’s daughter will not only enrich his community but will grant his daughters some stability too.

The only thing standing in Emery’s way is that he can’t he seem to keep his eyes—and hands—off the former soldier he’s hired to watch his girls until the wedding.

Emery’s future is riding on his upcoming nuptials, but being with Brann makes him and his family feel whole again. Too bad there’s no way for them to be together.

Or is there?

Cringey insta-love romance between a ridiculous Gary Stu and a cardboard single dad.

Villainous Things: Putting Out For A Hero – C. Rochelle

Baltasar

It’s time for me to start pulling my weight in the Suarez clan—to prove I’m worth more than the plays I make on the field or the dirt I dig up on rival families. I want to make Wolfy proud.

And not get unalived by Simon.

So I volunteered what I had to offer, knowing my infamous genes could be used for uniting two powerful clans in marriage. After all, I’m the only not-gay one in my family, so that alone should entice the super-babes looking to get busy with baby-making.

I mean, as long as they don’t ask me to do math or anything.

But the last supe I expected Wolfy to match me with was the ice queen hero herself, Dahlia Salah. She’s not bad, but her brother is my former Deathball rival, and the only one on the planet who can make me Hulk out with a single snarky word.

All I have to do is keep my eye on the prize and ignore this weird tension between Zion and me.

I’ve totally got this.

Zion

I never would have guessed Baltasar Suarez would be the man to lock down my sister.

But shady business deals are what make our world go ‘round, and Dahlia sealed her fate when she went up against the leaders of his clan—as if she were destined for our legendary throne instead of me.

Not that I’ve been interested in wearing the crown.

Not after everything that happened.

Without Deathball to distract me, I spend most of my time keeping my daughter safe and happy, even though her mother is gone and my parents treat her like an outcast.

Otherwise, I’ve just been… existing. Until Baltasar showed up, as tempting as ever—reminding me of all I’ve lost, and everything I’ve ever wanted. Everything I can never have.

Or can I?

My beast—my true supe form—has already decided the villain is ours, so why not remind my backstabbing family that everything under this roof is destined to belong to me?

Starting with him.

Putting Out for a Hero is an MM romance between a superhero and a villain. Our men find other men in tight supersuits incredibly attractive.

This is not your kid’s superhero book. This is Sin City and The Boys having a love child with extra spicy Spideypool and is meant for 18+ adults who can handle such things.

The Villainous Things series contains standalone books (each with HEAs) that feature interconnected characters and an overarching plot. You should read them in order (starting with Not All Himbos Wear Capes)

IF YOU LOVE (full list of CW/TWs coming soon to the author’s website)

• Superheroes/villains
• Two households both alike in villainy
• Himbo “I’m baby” golden retriever meets psychotic Godzilla
• Single dad + bada$$ little queen
• Sports rivals-to-lovers

• Bi-awakening + I’ve always been bi for you
• Fancy monster peen
• Filthy talk + keenks you (and Balty) didn’t know you had
• Hurt/comfort + found family
• The usual naughty humor, witty banter & sweary dialogue
• MM romance (in case you missed that part)

Then dive into the deep end!

Lovable characters, fantastic world, dragging story.

Beyond the Veil – S.C. Wynne

Being a psychic in the small seaside town of Fox Harbor is challenging enough, but winter months are brutal. Not that using his clairvoyant abilities to hunt down lost pets isn’t thrilling, but Lorenzo wouldn’t mind a tiny bit more excitement in his life.
Things get more stimulating when the charismatic Dr. Ian Thatcher takes a romantic interest in him. Unfortunately, their promising evening takes a ghastly turn when an old man dies on Lorenzo’s doorstep, after warning Lorenzo his life is in danger.
Before Lorenzo can say “Give me my old boring life back, please” his home is ransacked, a fiery being tries to burn him to death, and he’s informed he’s the only hope to save the world.

Points for the unexpected twists though, overall, the plot was all over the place and the story was forgettable.

The Jimmy McSwain Files: Hidden Identity – Adam Carpenter

When Jimmy McSwain is hired to find missing heir Harris Rothschild, he finds that identities can be altered and lives can be changed–or taken with the simple pull of the trigger.

Jimmy McSwain is a New York City private detective, operating out of Hell’s Kitchen, the rough and tumble neighborhood he grew up in. At age fourteen, he watched as his NYPD father was gunned down.

Now, at age twenty-eight, gay, Jimmy has never given up the pursuit of whoever killed him. But a PI must make a living, and so he’s taken on the case of missing heir Harris Rothschild, whose overbearing father doesn’t approve of his “alternate” lifestyle.

Tracking down Harris is easier than expected, but the carnage that follows isn’t. With a shocking murder on his hands, and a threat coming from some unforeseen person, Jimmy’s caseload is suddenly full, and very dangerous.

Noir-ish PI-led mystery with compelling voice, intriguing cases, diverse characters, and gritty NYC setting that would make a great drama series.

The Jimmy McSwain Files: Crime Wave – Adam Carpenter

Jimmy McSwain returns to help his sister’s boyfriend fight a murder charge–and finds he may just have a lead on a cold case.

Hell’s Kitchen private investigator Jimmy McSwain returns in a twisting tale of past sins and present-day vengeance.

Jimmy McSwain isn’t thrilled about taking a case for free but when his sister fears her boyfriend, Rocky, is cheating on her, he has no choice. But the case takes a deadly turn when Rocky is standing over the body of a man he was just seen kissing, and he’s holding the gun. He begs Jimmy to prove his innocence.

Meanwhile, as a sweltering heat wave claims New York City, a gunman with a thirst for blood is targeting Manhattan deli owners and has already claimed two victims. Jimmy knows a thing or two about those, fourteen years ago his father was killed outside a deli, and it’s possible today’s killer could be linked to that unsolved murder, one that continues to haunt Jimmy.

Enlisting the aid of sexy NYPD Captain Francis X. Frisano, Jimmy finds himself torn between the two cases, as well as the heat simmering between himself and the hot cop. Suddenly a quiet summer has erupted into a full-blown crime wave.

Jimmy’s affair with Cap Frank Frisano sizzled while NYPD conspiracies on the murder of Jimmy’s cop dad put a damper on the proceedings.

Interesting world, cool superpowers, weak plot, characterization and romantic development.

Black Ops: Operation Orion’s Belt: Kept In The Dark – Charlie Cochet

Former Army Ranger turned government assassin Álvaro Montero and CIA Officer Caiden Cardosa crossed paths two years ago in Vienna, where their encounter ended less than amicably—despite the explosive sexual chemistry between them.

Now Caiden is riding a desk at Langley after his cover is blown. And Álvaro—who was “killed”—has a new identity and purpose as Delta/D, an operative for the Locke and Keyes Agency, under the leadership of the mysterious Alpha Orion.

When D and Caiden team up in a deadly black ops mission, the urge to kill each other will have to take a back seat to the desire for revenge against the man who betrayed them both. Surviving the mission won’t be easy. Resisting the passion between them—that might be impossible.

Locke and Keyes Agency intrigued me to no end so I’m determined to follow this new series even if this opener wasn’t the most solid.

Killer Boys: Serial Asylum – M.P. Bates

I want to understand his darkness, and see if it’s just like mine.

Warren

I’ve been alone out here since I was released from jail.

No one bothers me way out here.

I can kill anyone I want, undetected, because no one in this town gives a shit.

But there’s this guy who keeps bringing me unconscious bodies and leaving them at the backdoor for me to have.

He stalks me from out in the woods.

He looks just as damaged as me.

I thought I had my walls built too high to let anyone in, but this man will become my new obsession.

Movin’ To The Mountains: The Silent Mountain Man – Casey Cox

Nearly getting killed in a mudslide only reminds me why I hate the mountains. I’m uninjured, but my car is wrecked, there’s no way I can get into town, and of course there’s no reception here.

I’m screwed.

Maybe it’s karma for putting this trip off. I haven’t been able to bring myself to visit since Pa’s funeral.

And then there are the painful memories that still haunt me of my first love…and first heartbreak.

The summer I turned eighteen, I exchanged letters with a free-spirited, long-haired boy who lived down the road from my father. We hung out all day and wrote each other romantic letters all night. It was the best time of my life.

But now they’re both gone, and I’m all alone.

Literally. This mountain feels deserted. Like I’m the only living soul on it.

And then, just as I’m about to give up all hope, a pickup truck pulls up. A man steps out.

Not just any man, though… Pure. Mountain man. Perfection.

Big muscles, a thick beard just begging to be touched, and an intense stare that’s making me rethink my dislike of the mountains.

Harrick offers me a place to stay, and despite being a total stranger, there’s something familiar about him that makes me feel like I can trust him. Also, what other choice have I got?

He takes me back to his cabin. Turns out, he’s not much of a talker. I can work with that.

We hook up. I can definitely work with that.

I almost forget that I’m here to sell my father’s house and finally move on from the guy who left me brokenhearted all those years ago.

And then I find a letter in Harrick’s house—one of the letters I wrote all those years ago — and everything changes.

The exciting buildup led to a slightly underwhelming resolution.

Devlin “Dev” Espinosa lives in the shadows of the criminal underworld. As a Ferryman, his job is to safely transport “the dead” to their new lives, no questions asked. With no one to answer to, lots of cash, and access to The Anonymous–an exclusive club for the elite–Dev is loving life.

Until Remy Corbin gets into his car.

Remy is just a regular guy working a regular bartending job. At least, that’s what he thought before walking in on his boss taking someone out. Witnessing the assassination paints a target on Remy’s back, and when the bullets fly, he jumps into a stranger’s car.

Dev has no intention of getting involved in Remy’s problems, but something about the guy brings out protective instincts Dev didn’t know he had. Going against his better judgment, Dev vows to keep Remy alive.

Can wild nights fueled by danger and explosive passion lead to more? Or will the hitman on their tail cut their romance–and lives–short?

Love for the Reaper is a part of the multi-author series The Elite. Each book can be read as a standalone and in any order. What links these books together is The Anonymous, a club beneath the gritty city where only the elite are welcome.

The romantic development would be more believable had it been given more page-time to properly evolve.

The Pride: Lion’s Tail – Jordan L. Hawk

Control the booze. Control the magic. Control Chicago.

At the same time, a corrupt prohibition agent demands Sam and Alistair investigate the gang member’s murder. Caught between gangster and agent, they must walk a fine line just to stay alive.

Because the sinister forces behind the killing are still out there, and now they have Sam in their sights…

Honestly, it’s slightly blah but still a welcome addition to the Hexworld universe

Jericho’s Boys: Paladin – Onley James

Arseny Lebedev lives a normal life. During the day, he’s a mechanic. At night, he livestreams a fairy tale video game called Paladin. And sometimes—only sometimes—he kills people. But they all deserve it.

Ever doesn’t know his last name. He doesn’t know much of anything. Most of his life has been torture, bought and sold by a woman who calls herself his mother. He’s resigned himself to a life of servitude, until he meets Arsen.

The moment Arsen sees Ever, they’re bonded. Ever is both fragile and feral, willing to defend himself with any tool at his disposal, even teeth. Arsen is color and light, a beacon in Ever’s darkness, as brave as the knight in the game he plays.

Arsen protects Ever fiercely, but just when he feels safe, someone attempts to drag him back to his old life, reminding him that reality isn’t fairy tales or video games. He knows staying puts Arsen in danger. But Arsen insists they’re safer together. Can Ever truly have his happily ever after or is it game over?

Paladin is a hurt-comfort, dark romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features a vigilante twitch-streamer and the beautiful but feral gremlin he saves from a life of misery. As with any Onley book, you’ll find dark humor, steamy sexy times, and gratuitous violence against people who totally deserve it. This is book 1 in the Jericho’s Boys series. Each book follows a different couple.

Arsen and Ever were too cute and too horny, they almost lost the plot if not for the catching (and torturing) the bad guys part.
