LAST YEAR I WAS READING…(October 17, 2020)

This meme was created by Reading Marie. It’s a great meme because it’s nice and easy to do.

Here are the rules:

Take your current read and compare it to what you reading this exact time last year. Which one do you like better? What is different about the books? Any special facts/things you want to make note of or bring attention to?

High Heat is the second book of Annabeth Albert’s smokejumper series, Hotshots. I enjoyed the first book, Burn Zone but so far this one is feeling lukewarm. Maybe due to the fact that there’s not much going on yet apart from the romantic development between a pair of characters I’m not particularly drawn to. There’s a shy dog who needs a forever home so I’ll stick around for her.

King Slayer is a great second book to Layla Reyne’s very cliffy assassin trilogy, Fog City. This made me change my mind about Hawes and made me appreciate him better. I still wasn’t drawn to Dante but seeing things from his POV shed light on his motives which made me feel better towards him. There were so many developments here that moved the story forward and at the same time, there were still questions left unanswered. It definitely amped up excitement for the finale.

One thing these books have in common is that they are about men with dangerous jobs. High Heat involves elite firefighters while King Slayer is about people operating inside and outside the law. The first book has an age-gap romance while the other has a criminal/fed merger. Both books are sequels, with elements of suspense and action. Between the two, obviously I liked King Slayer more.

What were you reading this time last year?

(I hope it’s as riveting as Morticia’s book)
