THE TOTALLY SHOULD’VE BOOK TAG

I found this tag at Adventures of a Bookish Girl, and it’s created by Emmmabooks. Here we go…

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… NOT GOTTEN A SEQUEL

I’m a fan of Gossip Girl so I was looking forward to Luxe series which was touted to be a historical GG. Sadly The Luxe wasn’t all that glamorous but the sequel, Rumors was even worst that it got a one star rating from me.

Prisoner by Megan Derr was one of the earliest MM I read. It was fantastic. The short stories were awesome too. As much as I wanted to learn more about Dieter and Behrat, the sequel, Bound, was a disappointing bore.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… HAD A SPIN-OFF SERIES

Luna Lovegood should totally have her own series or at least a book. I love that underneath all her quirky attitude, she’s really very smart!

Ancel from Captive Prince was a revelation. I didn’t pay him any attention but when he had his own short story, he was scintillating! I think he’ll make a good lead character.

Many K.J. Charles characters deserve their own book. Barney and Max from Spectred Isle, the members of The Murder from Band Sinister, Saint from A Charm of Magpie series, Greta Starling from Sins of the Cities and so much more.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… ENDED DIFFERENTLY

Blossoms in Autumn is a graphic novel about elderly people finding another chance at love. It was charming and melancholy but I totally did not like the fact that the ending was very trite.

Mad About The Hatter was a gay retelling of Alice in Wonderland in which The Hatter fell in love with a boy named Henry. It was a fun romp across Wonderland but I wished Henry would stay instead of planning to go back to the real world.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… HAD A TV SHOW / FILM FRANCHISE

I posted here that we never actually have an action film with gay leads so I would love to have L.J. Hayward‘s Death and the Devil series as a film franchise.

There are also some really good MM police procedural series that would make a great tv shows, some of them involving psychics, like Psycop by Jordan Castillo Price, or FBI agents, like Josh Lanyon‘s The Art of Murder series and of course, the riveting Bad Behavior series by L.A. Witt and Cari Z.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… HAD ONE POINT OF VIEW

I like multiple POVs so this one is hard to answer. So maybe something like a POV of someone not human.

I liked how it was written but I think Our Frail Disordered Lives by Mary M. Schmidt would be funnier if it was entirely from the demon’s POV.

Same with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I’m interested to see the story from the perspective of the Gentleman with Thistledown Hair. What does he think of humans?

Gokusen is awesome as it is but I’m curious to see what would it look like written from Shin’s perspective alone.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… HAD A COVER CHANGE

My biggest complaint about MM books is that majority of them have really terrible covers, especially those that show nothing but abs and a bare torso. So THOSE definitely need to go.

I say have Natasha Snow design the covers. I totally loved her cover designs. They’re artistic and classy. For example her work on the Criminal Delights series. Given the subject matter, it have been easy to go the overtly sexual route but the her covers perfectly captured the dark sensuality of the stories without without being in-your-face sexy .

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… STOPPED READING

Duce by Kai Taylor had characters so one dimensional I was surprise it actually merited a sequel. I really should have given up on this. I lost some hours of my life.

I used to have a rule of not DNFing but then I realized there are so many other books that need my attention so no sense in wasting time on something bad.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… KEPT THE COVER

I have a fondness for the original black and white cover of the Whyborne & Griffin series. The book models perfectly fit the characters in my head. I don’t know why they changed it midseries.

I loved the Mary GrandPré illustrated Harry Potter book and I wished they kept those. I was also pissed when Disney bought the rights to the Artemis Fowl books and gave them different covers. That ruined my collection.

TOTALLY SHOULD’VE… NOT PREJUDGED

Again MM books with terrible covers because many of them have really good stories but I do wish somebody would improve these designs.

Case in point: Cat Sebastian‘s The Soldier’s Scoundrel. I’m a visual person so I totally judge a book by its cover. A cover like that below, I wouldn’t have even bothered but the Turner series was mindblowingly good so I had to at least try. And I was happy that it turn out as perfect as the other two books.

Hope you enjoy this tag! Feel free to tag yourself.

How do you guys feel about Luna as a lead character? Which book do you think should’ve have ended differently? Any book covers you hate but has a really good story inside?

I haven’t read a lot of these, but would totally love a REAL Harry Potter spin off series, Luna Lovegood would be FABULOUS! (I don’t consider screen plays to be a spin off!) Also glad to hear that the Luxe sequel isn’t worth checking out.

You’re right, screenplays don’t count. I love Newt but I haven’t seen the second Fantastic Beast movie. I’ve heard some negative things about it. Yes Luxe has gorgeous covers but that all that it has going for it .
